Eastenders and Other Soaps

Just wondered if anyone watched Eastenders, which has reached its 40th anniversary or any other soap operas? I don’t and am amazed that people still do as there’s so much choice of viewing these days.

Comedies

I hope nobody minds me starting another tv/film thread, but I think we could do with some lightheartedness. I’ve got a few comedies I watch that I really love.  Never watched them when they were broadcast, and only started watching them fairly recently.  
Miranda:  Splits opinion on the Internet, but makes me laugh a lot.  Good British farce. Benidorm:  Title put me off, but I really enjoy it’s carry-on comedy and double-entendre .  Schitts Creek:  Everybody loves it.   The Office USA:  Never thought the British version could be bettered, but the U.S. characters are much more likeable. Any comedy recommendations would be appreciated for when we reach the end of the Office USA.

Hammersmith Bridge

I'm all for preserving our history. Many buildings and other structures have been lost over the years in circumstances where they could, and in many cases should, have been preserved. That said, we do not live in a museum and our built environment needs to serve the population around it.  There is also the issue of the allocation of finite financial resources.. In my view we have come to the end of the road (excuse the pun) with Hammersmith Bridge. The focus needs to be entirely on a cost effective alternative crossing.  Perhaps the entrance to the bridge from both sides can be removed and the middle section left as a monument, who knows. The point is that the costs of playing around with that bridge are eye watering, the inconvenience caused to the public is substantial and the knock on effect of pollution over the other crossings is highly detrimental to health.  Surely the delays at the other crossings have an adverse impact on the economy too - especially local trades people who needs to move and where time really is money.  Initially I would have been first in the queue to argue that the bridge needs to be saved and what price our heritage.  My view has changed. There is a price, both monetary and otherwise, and it's simply too high.

Palestinian refugees given right to come to Britain under Ukraine settlement scheme - as Home Office warns the move could open 'floodgates'The family of six from Gaza - a mother, father and four children between seven and 18 years old - had reportedly applied to the Ukraine Family Scheme asking to join their brother already living in the UK, but the Home Office rejected their application.The scheme allowed Ukrainians and their family members to find refuge in Britain if they have a relative who is either a UK national or settled in the UK. It closed last February, nearly two years after it was set up in March 2022. An immigration tribunal initially refused the claim because the scheme for Ukrainians did not apply to the situation of the Palestinian family.The judge ruled that it should be up to Parliament to decide which countries should benefit from resettlement schemes. But this decision was overturned by judge Hugo Norton-Taylor at a higher-level tribunal.He granted the Palestinians the right to live in the UK with their brother under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which outlines the right to a family life. Judge Norton-Taylor reportedly said that the family's 'extreme and life-threatening' situation was outweighing the 'public interest' of rules regulating the entry to the UK.Shadow secretary Mr Philp criticised the 'alarming and dangerous' ruling, telling the Telegraph that it provides 'a basis for anyone in any conflict zone anywhere in the world with relations in the UK to come here'.https://mol.im/a/14386875So a senior judge uses Article 8 of an ECHR dictate to overrule an asylum claim that had already been rejected twice by the Home Office.This is why we MUST leave the ECHR and only Reform U.K.will do this if it forms the next government!

Full Stop Shock!

My husband printed off something he had written and asked me to check it.  I said he needed to put 2 spaces after a full stop.  He said he never does, and always puts one space only.
I looked on the internet and it said you can tell someone is over 40, if they use 2 spaces after a full stop. Everyone under 40 uses one space. As someone who trained as a secretary and passed typing exams, I don’t think I can cope with this.  Only one space, it’s just not right.

Rachel from (fiddling the ) accounts.

Now it transpires dear old Rachel was rather expansive with her expenses at HBOS. Under investigation but took voluntary redundancy before any action. The old if you go now we wont pursue the investigation.Also seems her LinkedIn was still wrong. It now transpires that almost a decade at the Bank of England was about 5 years a year of which was at UNI.One wonders how expansive she was about the black hole? This government of accountability is going well.
