Concern Over Low Take Up of Vaccine in Putney and Roehampton

SW15 postcode area well below London average as infections surge

Vaccination programme is targeting younger people at the moment

Vaccination rates in the SW15 postcode area are currently significantly below the London and national average. This is giving rise to concern that the spread of the Delta variant will be more severe locally and public health officials are urging more people to get the jab as quickly as possible.

The average for the area is just 61.0% of adults for the first jab and 37.1% for the second up to 7 July. This compares to a London average of 77.6% and 52.0% respectively according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS)

The proportion of adults getting their jabs is particularly low in Roehampton with the area defined as Roehampton North West by the ONS having a take up of just 51.5% for the first jab and less than a third for the second.

Even the highest rate of vaccination in the vicinity in Southfields North is below the overall average for the capital.

Local health experts believe there will be a close correlation between the spread of the Delta variant of the disease and the level of vaccination so further efforts are being made to encourage more people to get their jab particularly younger people.

For the whole of London 52.2% of 18-24 year olds have received their first dose with just 15.0% having had their second. This rises to 65.9% and 20.1% respectively for the 25-29 age group.

Although there have been no reports of increased deaths or hospitalisations due to Covid there has been a surge in infections in the area over the last week (to 3 July) with cases nearly doubling in the area. Surprisingly, at this stage Southfields North has the highest infection rate at 436.6 per 100,000 population with 42 cases and the Roehampton area has seen a relatively low number of positive tests.

Wandsworth Borough has London’s third highest rate of infection at the moment at 316 with only Lambeth and Hammersmith & Fulham ahead of it.
