Covid-19 Infections Spike in Centre of Putney

Council issues warning to younger people about spread of the virus

Social distancing still advised if you are watching the Euros

There has been a sharp increase in the number of Covid-19 cases reported in the centre of Putney.

The area designated as Putney Town & Wandsworth Park has seen 20 new positive tests in the week to 5 June having reported only 3 in the previous week.

Other local neighbourhoods are also seeing significant increases in infections include Southfields North, Putney West and Roehampton South & Putney Vale.

However, some areas such as Roehampton North West and Putney & Embankment & Lower Common had no cases reported during the week.

Putney is relatively badly affected compared to most other parts of south west London although a more severe resurgence of the disease appears currently to be occurring in the Clapham area.

Wandsworth is now the second worst affected borough in London after Lambeth with an infection rate of 81 per 100,000 population.

Wandsworth Council say the rise is concentrated in people aged between 18-30 and they are urging people to continue to observe social distancing rules particularly with the beginning of the European Championship football tournament.

“Back in April, Wandsworth residents were fantastic in coming forward for surge testing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 variants and tens of thousands of people have already had their first and second COVID jab. It’s really important that we don’t waste the progress already made,” said Wandsworth’s Director of Public Health Shannon Katiyo.

“If you are meeting other people, take a test first, follow all social distancing rules and as soon as you are offered the vaccine, take it.

“If we all pull together now we can stop the situation getting worse.”

The vaccine is now being offered to everyone over the age of 25. If you have not yet been contacted by your GP, contact the NHS or call 119.

There were two more people reported as having died of Covid-19 in the vicinity of the SW15 postcode area during April, the latest month for which these figures are available. This brings the total reported number of fatalities in the area to 127.
