Arts Society SW London Examines The Cultural Heart of Central Europe
Gavin Plumley on the history and artistic heritage of Slovenia, Ljubljana and Trieste

The Arts Society SW London is hosting a special study morning later this month, offering members and visitors an in-depth journey through the landscapes, history and artistic heritage of Slovenia, Ljubljana and Trieste. The event takes place on Wednesday 22 April, from 10:30am to 1pm, at Putney Arts Theatre, Ravenna Road, SW15.
The morning will be led by Gavin Plumley, a well-known cultural historian and broadcaster whose work frequently appears on BBC Radio 3 and in publications such as The Guardian, The Times Literary Supplement and The Financial Times. Mr Plumley specialises in Central European culture, with a particular focus on the Habsburg world, modernism, and the cultural crossroads of the Adriatic and Alpine regions. His recent book A Home for All Seasons was widely praised for its blend of history, art and personal narrative.
Plumley will deliver two lectures exploring the region historically known as Carniola—the heartland of modern Slovenia—and the dramatic Karst landscape that has shaped its culture and identity. He will also examine the artistic and architectural heritage of Ljubljana, famed for the work of architect Jože Plečnik, and Trieste, the once-cosmopolitan port city that inspired writers such as James Joyce and Italo Svevo.
Organisers say the morning will appeal not only to art lovers but also to anyone planning to visit the region, offering cultural insight into an area where Slavic, Italian and Austro-Hungarian influences meet.
Doors open at 10:00am, and advance booking is required.
