As the festive season draws near, The Arts Society South West London is inviting residents to step back in time and explore the demanding world of Georgian cookery.
On Monday 8 December at 8pm, historian and author Peter Ross will deliver a lecture titled “Cinders in the Dripping Pan: Cooking in the Georgian Kitchen” at The Community Church on Werter Road, Putney.
The talk will be open to non-members from 7:45pm, following the Society’s annual Members’ Christmas Party. Entry is free for members, while non-members can attend for £10 at the door or watch online for £5.
The lecture promises a vivid journey into the domestic heart of the Georgian era, where cooks laboured without electricity, gas or modern appliances. Using prints, paintings, book illustrations and surviving kitchen equipment, Ross will reveal how Georgian cooks managed complex menus with an array of moulds, boards, pots and tools—often under intense pressure and with little margin for error.
Peter Ross brings a wealth of expertise to the subject. With a History of Art degree, an MA in London history, and a PhD in cultural history, he has lectured widely on English books, portraiture and urban life. Formerly Principal Librarian at Guildhall Library, Ross has appeared on television and radio, and his recent book The Curious Cookbook was published by the British Library. His current research focuses on dining culture in Georgian London.
The lecture is part of The Arts Society South West London’s ongoing programme of cultural events aimed at deepening public understanding of art, history and heritage.
