Residents are being invited to a public meeting later to learn how to protect themselves from online fraud, scams and cyber-enabled crime.

The Putney Society will hold its next open meeting on Monday 23 February at 7.30pm, focusing on the growing risks posed by cyber criminals and the practical steps people can take to stay safe.

The event, hosted by the Society’s Community Panel, will take place at The Community Church, Werter Road, SW15 2LL, with refreshments available and full disabled access.

The keynote speaker will be PC Oliver Clixby from the Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit. He will explain how cyber criminals manipulate trust, how data breaches occur, and the techniques hackers use to crack passwords. His talk will also cover what personal information is publicly available online, the implications when companies holding data are hacked, and the measures individuals can take to strengthen their digital security.

Representatives from the local Safer Neighbourhood Team are also expected to attend, subject to operational demands elsewhere in London. Neighbourhood Watch coordinators and local bank representatives may also be present to offer advice and answer questions.

For those unable to attend in person, the meeting will be live-streamed. Residents wishing to join online can request the link by emailing registration@putneysociety.org.uk.

The Putney Society says the session aims to give residents practical, accessible guidance at a time when online scams and fraud attempts are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

Putney Society, a registered charity, is an amenity society run by volunteers to preserve and enhance our local heritage and community.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.

We've always done that and won't be changing, in fact we'd like to do more.

However, the readership that these stories generates is often below that needed to cover the cost of producing them. Our financial resources are limited and the local media environment is intensely competitive so there is a constraint on what we can do.

One-off donations are also appreciated. Choose The Amount You Wish To Contribute.
