Putney residents are invited to uncover the hidden history of their local churches in a special heritage talk hosted by the Putney Society later this month. The event, titled Discover Putney’s Hidden Church Heritage, will take place on Wednesday 29 October at 7.30pm at St Margaret’s Church, Putney Park Lane.
The talk is the first in a two-part series exploring the religious architecture and community legacy of the area. From medieval chapels to Victorian Gothic landmarks, and from post-war rebuilds to modern conversions, Putney’s places of worship have long reflected the area’s evolving social and spiritual life.
Many churches have disappeared entirely, while others have been repurposed or radically altered. Speakers will share insights drawn from parish records, architectural surveys, and community memories—revealing which churches once stood where homes and shops now sit, and how faith communities have adapted to changing times.
Rev Dr Brutus Green will host the evening at St Margaret’s, a fitting venue for a discussion that begins with the Church of England’s historic presence in Putney. The second talk, scheduled for next year, will be held at the Community Church and will spotlight a broader range of denominations and congregations active in the area.
The event will be live-streamed, and attendees are asked to register in advance by emailing registration@putneysociety.org.uk or writing to 18 Burstock Road, SW15 2PW, indicating whether they will attend in person or online.
Putney Society, a registered charity, is an amenity society run by volunteers to preserve and enhance our local heritage and community.
