The 1885 Singers will present a concert of sacred choral music at All Saints’ Church, Putney Common. The programme to be performed on Sunday 9 November at 7.30pm, will feature two major works from the classical repertoire: Joseph Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, including the much-loved soprano solo “Laudate Dominum.”
The Nelson Mass, also known as Missa in Angustiis (“Mass for Troubled Times”), was composed in 1798 during a period of political uncertainty in Europe. It is one of Haydn’s most dramatic and expressive sacred compositions, combining powerful choral writing with orchestral brilliance. The piece earned its nickname after Admiral Lord Nelson’s victory at the Battle of the Nile, and has since become a staple of the choral canon.
Mozart’s Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, written in 1780 for liturgical use in Salzburg, is a vibrant and lyrical setting of evening prayers. The work includes five movements, culminating in the serene and soaring “Laudate Dominum,” which showcases the soprano soloist.
The concert will be conducted by Christopher Langworthy and will feature solo performances by Madeleine Perring (soprano), Tom Lilburn (alto), Tom Law (tenor), and Karol Jozwik (bass). The 1885 Singers will be joined by a professional orchestra.
Founded in 1885, the choir has a long tradition of performing major choral works in southwest London. Known for its musical precision and commitment to accessible performance, the ensemble regularly collaborates with experienced soloists and instrumentalists. It is a non-auditioned choir of about 50 voices who enjoy singing from a wide repertoire of secular and sacred choral music.
Tickets will be available at the door, priced at £18, with concessions at £15. All Saints’ Church is located on Putney Common and is a well-established venue for classical music events. Audience members are encouraged to arrive early for seating.
