Picture: 1885 Singers
October 30, 2024
This year’s autumn concert from The 1885 Singers will be a performance of Joseph Haydn’s The Creation.
Led by musical director Christopher Langworthy, the choir will be singing at All Saints' Church, Putney Common at 7.30pm on Sunday 17 November.
The Creation is an oratorio written in 1797 and 1798 and considered by many to be one of Haydn’s masterpieces. It depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as narrated in the Book of Genesis. Haydn was inspired to write a large oratorio during his visits to England when he heard Handel’s oratorios being performed.
The work is structured in three parts and scored for soprano, tenor and bass soloists, chorus and a symphonic orchestra. In parts I and II, depicting the creation, the soloists represent the archangels Raphael (bass), Uriel (tenor) and Gabriel (soprano). In part III, the bass and soprano represent Adam and Eve.
Theano Papadaki will take the soprano part with Albie Soriano and Will Ford as bass.
Tickets can be purchased on the door for £18 with concession tickets priced at £15.
The 1885 Singers is open to everyone and gives four concerts a year. There is a 4-8 week lead into each concert with rehearsals on Mondays in All Saints Church.
It is a non-auditioned choir of about 50 voices who enjoy singing from a wide repertoire of secular and sacred choral music.
