Putney Action Group Launches Community Survey
Volunteer organisation wants to hear your views on key local issues

Putney Action Group has launched a new community survey as part of its campaign to tackle congestion and shape the future of Putney.
The group, known for its long-running advocacy on traffic and air quality, says the survey marks a shift towards a broader conversation about the town’s priorities — from leisure facilities and public spaces to local business support and environmental initiatives.
The launch follows months of mounting frustration among residents over daily gridlock on Lower Richmond Road, Putney Bridge Road and surrounding streets. PAG members recently joined councillors and Wandsworth Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Dan Hamilton, for a walkabout of the worst-affected areas.
According to the group, the visit left little room for doubt. Queues stretched back to Putney Common, side streets were blocked, and residents stopped councillors to describe journeys taking far longer than they should. Several near misses and examples of aggressive driving and cycling were witnessed during the visit.
PAG says the problem goes beyond inconvenience, with residents increasingly worried about road safety, air quality and the impact on everyday life. The group argues that Putney has become the “release valve” for a wider transport system under strain — bearing the brunt of bridge closures, diverted traffic and unreliable public transport.
Among the issues cited are the redesign of the Putney Bridge junction, the closure of Hammersmith Bridge, lane restrictions on Wandsworth Bridge, and the planned year-long closure of Albert Bridge. Each, PAG says, adds pressure to local roads and displaces traffic into residential areas.
The group insists that responsibility for fixing these problems lies with statutory authorities, not residents. “Putney cannot continue to be the release valve for a wider transport system under strain,” the statement reads. “No community should be expected to shoulder the consequences of decisions made elsewhere indefinitely.”
PAG, a volunteer-led organisation, says its role is to ensure residents’ voices and local knowledge remain part of the conversation. It continues to engage with Wandsworth Council, Transport for London and local councillors, pressing for accountability and long-term solutions.
Residents are invited to take part in the new community survey, which asks for views on Putney’s future vision, leisure centre proposals, community projects, business opportunities, environmental initiatives and transport.
The group is also encouraging new volunteers to join its efforts, from analysing traffic data to supporting community projects.
