A major refurbishment of the bridges outside East Putney Tube station is set to begin on 2 March.

Wandsworth Council have announced plans which aim to transform the area into a brighter and more welcoming gateway for residents, commuters and visitors.

The works, which will take place overnight to minimise disruption, form part of a wider borough-wide programme to improve railway bridges and underpasses, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists.

The project will include deep-cleaning the bridges, repainting the surfaces and underpasses, jet-washing the brickwork, upgrading pigeon-proofing measures and installing new ‘East Putney’ signage on both bridge exteriors. A rendered image released by the council shows a more colourful and modern look once the works are complete.

The improvements are being delivered in partnership with Network Rail and Transport for London (TfL). Funding comes from contributions collected from property developers, meaning the refurbishment will be carried out at no cost to local taxpayers.

Jenny Yates, Wandsworth Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said the project would make a noticeable difference to the area.

“These improvements will make a real difference for everyone travelling through East Putney,” she said. “This investment is part of our Decade of Renewal, improving and refurbishing roads, pavements and bridges — all part of our commitment to making Wandsworth an even better place to live, work and spend time.”

Work will take place between 10pm and 5am for approximately 40 nights, excluding weekends. A single-lane closure will be in place with temporary traffic signals, but the road will remain open throughout.
