Rental Licensing Scheme Extended to More SW15 Wards
All rented properties in East and West Putney to be covered
The scheme aims to give extra piece of mind to renters in the borough

Wandsworth Council has announced that its borough-wide crackdown on unsafe rental properties will expand to include East Putney and West Putney from April 2026, as part of its growing landlord licensing scheme.
The scheme, which launched in July, already covers all Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) across Wandsworth and all privately rented homes in South Balham, Furzedown, Tooting Bec and Tooting Broadway. From 1 April, it will also apply to all rented properties in East Putney, West Putney and Northcote—regardless of occupancy size.
The council says the scheme is designed to protect tenants and hold landlords to account. Since its launch, nearly 6,000 licence applications have been received and 444 inspections carried out, resulting in 85 enforcement notices. Inspectors have uncovered serious safety breaches, including missing fire doors and dangerously undersized bedrooms.
Cabinet Member for Housing Aydin Dikerdem said, “These new landlord licensing schemes are already making properties safer for renters in Wandsworth. By extending the scheme to more of the borough, we have more robust powers to inspect and act where landlords are not living up to their duties.”
The inclusion of East and West Putney brings the scheme into areas with a high concentration of private rentals, particularly near transport hubs and university accommodation. Local renters will now benefit from the same protections already in place in other parts of the borough.
Landlords in the newly added wards must apply for a licence by 1 April 2026. Those in existing scheme areas have until 31 December 2025 to benefit from an early-bird discount.
Landlords operating without a licence could face fines of up to £30,000, and tenants may be eligible to reclaim up to 12 months’ rent or benefits if an offence is committed.
The council has also introduced a ‘Gold Standard’ to recognise landlords who exceed basic legal and tenancy requirements.
