Wandsworth Council has celebrated the completion of its 500th housing unit under the Homes for Wandsworth programme, reaching the halfway mark in its pledge to deliver 1,000 high-quality council homes by 2029.

The milestone, achieved with the opening of a new 14-flat development in Putney Vale, underscores the borough’s commitment to try to tackle the housing shortage.

The Putney Vale scheme offers a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes at council rent, prioritised for residents with local ties through a dedicated Local Lettings Plan. Alongside housing, the development includes secure bicycle storage, new parking spaces, a children’s play area, and landscaping improvements.

Cabinet Member for Housing Aydin Dikerdem hailed the achievement as “an incredible milestone,” noting that each home represents a family moved off waiting lists and into secure tenancies. With two further developments at Randall Close and Patmore Street set to add 163 homes, the borough remains on track to meet its 1,000-home target.

According to CBRE’s 2025 London Borough by Borough report, Wandsworth ranks among the more proactive boroughs in council-led development, though it faces stiff competition from areas like Newham, Southwark, and Hackney, which have also made significant strides in delivering affordable housing.

Trust for London’s comparative housing data highlights the uneven distribution of council homebuilding across the capital. While some boroughs have focused on partnerships with housing associations or private developers, Wandsworth has maintained direct delivery of council homes, a model that offers greater control over affordability and tenancy conditions.
