Homelessness charity Crisis is set to move into an empty shop in Putney High Street, which was once occupied by bookmaker Betfred.

The national charity, well known for its Crisis at Christmas campaign, plans to open a shop selling 'pre-loved' items to boost its funds as well as create a presence in the area.

It has 13 charity shops in London, but the opening of the shop at 97 Putney High Street will be its first in south-west London.

Crisis, which aims to help people out of homelessness, has applied for planning permission to Wandsworth Council to install a replacement shopfront on the property.

If the scheme gets the go-ahead the new shopfront will feature a new white-painted fascia, with graphics and logo featuring the red Crisis brand colours.

The planning application submitted on behalf of Crisis states the shop will "create a new stream of income and a presence in the area". It will also "build brand awareness and provide a community focal point for campaigning".

Wandsworth Council is consulting with 83 neighbours over the application. It is also seeking comments on the plans, which you can find on the council's planning explorer by searching for application number 2023/4003. Comments can be made until December 26.

The building, which is in between Mexican food chain Tortilla and health food shop Holland & Barrett, was built in 1905. In 2022 it was advertised for rent at £95,000 a year.

In 2018, the freehold title for 95B and 97 Putney High Street changed ownership for £4,425,000 for each. The shops were then occupied by Tortilla and Betfred.
