Tide Turns For Covid-19 Infections in Putney

Other nearby areas including Roehampton still seeing cases rise

Over 500 deaths from Covid-19 at St. George's Hospital

The latest data for Covid-19 shows that the number of cases across Putney is falling and the rate of infection is well below the London average.

In the week to 9 January there were 44 cases in the Putney West area a fall of 15.5% over the previous week to give an infection rate of less than half the London average.

It should be pointed out that before the arrival of the more virulent strain of the virus even this comparatively low rate would have been considered alarmingly high.

All parts of Putney have seen infections fall over the week except Putney Embankment and Lower Common where there was a 2.2% increase.

Roehampton continues to be worse affected particularly the North West of the area which saw another surge of infections this week with a 39.7% increase to 88 giving an infection rate of 1,235.6.

The highest rates of the virus in surrounding areas continue to be in West Hill North where cases increased by another 14.3% to reach and infection rate of 1,421.3.

Wandsworth borough overall continues to have an infection rate well below the London average with a level of 770 per 100,000 in the week to 9 January.

At this point local death rates are only available up to November. It is expected they will rise substantially in December and January given the high number of positive tests.

For the purpose of gathering this data the Office of National Statistics divides the country up into Middle Super Output Areas (MSOAs).

The continued high rate of cases overall has put extreme pressure on local health services with St. George’s Hospital in Tooting reporting over 300 people currently being treated for the disease. This week they passed the grim milestone of 500 Covid-19 related deaths since the pandemic began.

In the week to 9 January, 89,026 cases were identified in London, a rate of 993 cases per 100,000 population. This compares with 93,666 cases and a rate of 1045 for the previous week.

On 14 January the daily number of new people tested positive for Covid-19 in London was reported as 9,804 bring the total since the start of the pandemic to 548,116, This compares to a figure of 2,834,341 cases for England as a whole.

Tier four restrictions now apply to the area. These are similar to those imposed during the first national lockdown with people being told to stay at home - although travel for work is still permitted.

Social mixing is restricted to meeting one other person from outside your household in an open public space. All non-essential retail will have to close, along with hairdressers, nail bars and indoor entertainment venues.

Support bubbles remain unaffected, as do the exemptions for separated parents and their children.
