Reverend Helena to Take on Royal Parks Half Marathon
Priest at Putney Parish raising funds for homeless charity

Having last run a half marathon nearly 13 years ago, Reverend Helena Whittaker was surprised to find herself about to take on another one.
The associate priest at Putney Parish completed a thirteen-mile course in Leicester in 2011 and now she intends to run in this year’s Royal Parks Marathon to raise funds for homeless charity Glass Door.
She said, “Earlier this year I found myself signing up for another one! At that point I could often be found in the gym, but rarely running so it was quite a challenge to sign up to! Whilst I am certainly not an avid or natural runner, my training is going reasonably well and I’m keeping to my plan. But I shall certainly be glad when it’s over!”
The route for an expected 16,000 runners passes many of London’s landmarks, and four of the Royal Parks – Hyde Park, Green Park, Kensington Gardens and St James’s Park.
The run takes place on Sunday 13 October and her chosen charity is one already supported through the local church’s Parish Action as well as the Lady Margaret School community, where she works.
Reverend Helena adds, “It is a charity close to my heart and I am really impressed with the work they do. I am delighted to be raising money for them.
“Glass Door are doing great work to support and shelter those in our community who are at an absolute crisis point. Glass Door welcomes everyone as their guest, giving them some stability before helping them take the necessary steps to move off the streets for good. Their doors are open to everyone year-round. In winter, they provide emergency shelters, and they offer advice and support to help people move beyond homelessness throughout the year.”
She says all donations will be gratefully received as well as knowing she is raising lots of money will help motivate her final weeks of training.
