Gaza: where now?
As I've suggested elsewhere, the thread on this has reached 100 and has become unwieldy with the same points being made and remade endlessly, and I suggest we start again: instead of looking at who did what to whom in the past, we try beginning to see what can happen now.For a start, who is going to rule Gaza? Given that the Israelis won't accept either Hamas (for obvious reasons) or the Palestinian Authority (which most accept is irredeemably corrupt as well as completely useless), who even can run it? Do the Israelis plan to be simply the occupying force without any administrative role or do they think they can act as a ruling authority? In other words, have they even begun to think beyond the use of overwhelming force, or do they plan to go on killing - if so, how many more dead would be acceptable to Netanyahu and his gang before they let up: 30,000, 50,000? And whoever adopts the role, how is it possible to run the strip when so many have been killed, injured, bombed out of their homes leaving a mass of destruction? Is the total removal of over two million Palestinians really an objective of the government? And is the two state solution still possible (the only solution, in my view, that could ever work)? In short, where next? Perhaps some of the Israeli supporters here would like to suggest what would be feasible as the nest steps towards some kind of workable solution.
