West Hill Closure Could Continue for Some Time

Gas company says work needed for an emergency repair after leak detected

Aim is to improve safety for children walking to school

The gas distribution company which has dug up the A3 near the junction with the Upper Richmond Road is unable to say how long the work will take.

West Hill needed to be closed to westbound traffic after a gas leak was detected in the early hours of Tuesday morning (26 April). This has since resulted in significant traffic disruption in surrounding roads.

The council's roadworks update indicates that the closure could remain in place until 3 May but, at this stage, there it is not possible to confirm exactly when the road will reopen.

Bradley Barlow, spokesperson for gas distribution company SGN said, "We’re carrying out emergency repairs to our gas network the Upper Richmond Road / West Hill area following reports of a gas leak.

"Temporary road closures have been put in place around our work area to keep everyone safe and signed diversions are in place for road users.

"It’s too soon to say when our work will be completed but we aim to reopen the road closures as soon as it is safe to do so."
