Smugglers Way Re-Opens

Opening hours will be staggered to maintain social distancing

Residents in West London can take their large household rubbish to the tip next week – but opening hours will be staggered.

The Western Riverside Waste Authority will reopen its household rubbish tip at Smugglers Way on Monday, May 11 – but there will be restrictions to maintain social distancing because of coronavirus.

A spokeswoman stressed that: “This is not a return to normal operations as it is necessary to put in place arrangements to manage that process as safely and efficiently as possible.

“The plan for re-opening includes a change in opening hours, adopting measures for implementing social distancing on site and alleviating the potential for the queueing of traffic which would lead to congestion in the local area. “

There will be strict rules to prevent the spread of the virus after the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said residents can travel to recycling centres.

The department said people can only use the centres if the waste or recycling can’t be stored on home property without “causing a risk of injury, health or harm to the resident or other members of their household or harm to public health and amenity”.

People should also stay away if they have coronavirus symptoms or their household is following the 14-day isolation rules.

Weekly opening times have also changed and people can only visit on certain days, depending on their car registration numbers.

They have to stick to the strict two-metre social distancing rules too and are advised to wear gloves for their own protection.

People can only drop off green garden waste and bagged general waste – the rubbish that they put in their rubbish bin – and no other waste or recycling will be accepted.

The WRWA tips are used by Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster City Councils. Lambeth and Wandsworth councils also use them.

The waste transfer stations at Smugglers Way and Cringle Dock in Vauxhall for people arriving by van only will be open during usual hours.

But people have to pre-register, bring ID and have to wear sturdy, closed-in shoes and a hi-viz vest or jacket – which can are sold at at the Weighbridge Office for £9 while stocks last.

For Smugglers Way you can only visit on certain days, depending on your car registration number and at the times give below.
