Riverside litter blitz planned for Saturday 19th May
Environmental charity Thames21 and local Adopt-A-River group Barn Elms21 is calling for volunteers to help litter blitz the Thames by Hammersmith Bridge on Saturday 19 May.
Thames21’s River Programmes Coordinator Matthew Loveday said, ‘The Barn Elms Adopt-A-River group is one of Thames21’s longest serving clean up groups. This picturesque stretch of the Thames becomes an eyesore when levels of litter build up so the more volunteers we have on the day, the better. The River Thames is an incredible river corridor and wildlife superhighway and we can all help to turn the tide on litter.’
The most common items of litter that Thames21 find in the River Thames in no particular order are plastic bags, shopping trolleys, cotton buds, tyres, food packaging, polystyrene, scaffolding poles, plastic bottles and lids, sweet wrappers, clothing and drinks cans.
Thames21 is London’s leading waterways charity and works with all sections of the community to reduce levels of litter on the River Thames, its tributaries and the canal network. Thames21 provide practical support including equipment to local people and organisations interested in cleaning up their local stretch of river and run around 100 clean ups annually.
