Sparkle, the charity bringing older and younger residents together through weekly intergenerational activities, is starting up its free minibus service in Roehampton again.

The project, which runs every Tuesday from 10.30am to 2.15pm at Holy Trinity Roehampton, gives older people the chance to enjoy hands-on sessions with children, gentle exercise and a warm, nutritious lunch — all at no cost.

The Roehampton hub sits next door to a local primary school, allowing pupils to join the weekly sessions for shared activities that build confidence and empathy across generations. Each week brings something different: crafts, games, singing, storytelling and visits from guest speakers, alongside the charity’s popular seated exercise class and freshly prepared lunch.

From Tuesday 3 November, Sparkle will re-start its free winter minibus service, helping older residents who may struggle with mobility or transport to attend. The charity is encouraging anyone who knows an older person in Roehampton who might benefit to get in touch via hello@sparkletogether.org or sparkletogether.org.

The Roehampton project is part of Sparkle’s wider network of intergenerational centres across Wandsworth, including its Putney hub at  St Stephen’s Church Hall — London’s first dedicated intergenerational community centre. Since launching in 2022, Sparkle has grown from a single weekly session to four locations, reflecting rising demand for community-based support that tackles loneliness and helps older people stay active, connected and confident.

At the Putney centre, older residents meet nursery children and pupils from Brandlehow and St Joseph’s primary schools for activities that range from gardening and crafts to music, storytelling and visits from performers. As the charity explains, these sessions create “joyful, lively places where age barriers melt away,” rooted in evidence that intergenerational contact improves wellbeing and strengthens community ties.

Sparkle Together CIO, the charity behind the programme, was founded to address social isolation and to create spaces where older people can build friendships and feel part of local life. Its work is supported by volunteers, schools, churches and community organisations, and the charity continues to seek new partners as it expands.

Any older person is welcome to join Sparkle’s sessions, though pre-registration is required for safeguarding and planning.

For more information or to register, residents can contact hello@sparkletogether.org, visit www.sparkletogether.org, or call 020 8877 3003.
