Putney Choral Society is to present its Winter Concert featuring an eclectic programme of sacred and classical works. It takes place at St Paul’s Church, Southfields on Saturday 6 December at 7pm,
The evening will showcase Martin Palmeri’s Misa a Buenos Aires (Misatango), a contemporary mass blending Latin liturgy with tango rhythms; Scarlatti’s Magnificat, a baroque choral masterpiece; and Haydn’s ‘Emperor’ Quartet, Opus 76 No.3, known for its stirring second movement that later became the German national anthem. The concert will be conducted by Music Director Jamie Powe, with accompaniment from a professional orchestra and soloists.
Tickets are priced at £25, which includes a programme, refreshments, and a choice of wine or soft drink. They can be purchased online or at the door (card only). The venue, St Paul’s Church on Augustus Road, SW19 6EW, offers accessible facilities and is a well-known local setting for community music events.
Founded in 1947 by Dr Stephen Rhys MBE, Putney Choral Society is a non-auditioned choir welcoming singers of all ages and abilities. It has a long tradition of performing both classical and contemporary choral works, with recent repertoire including pieces by Bach, Britten, Faure, Holst, Poulenc, and Vaughan Williams. The choir is known for its inclusive ethos and commitment to musical excellence, regularly collaborating with professional musicians and soloists.
Under Jamie Powe’s direction, the Society continues to expand its repertoire and reach new audiences. The upcoming concert reflects this ambition, combining the rhythmic vitality of Palmeri’s Misatango with the elegance of Scarlatti and Haydn.
