Two contrasting productions make up the autumn season from the Putney Theatre Company.

This October it will be staging Ariel Dorfman’s Death and the Maiden and then, the following month, a stage version of the Oscar-winning film Shakespeare in Love will be performed. Both plays take place in the Putney Arts Theatre.

Death and the Maiden is being performed from 15-19 October at 7.45pm with a matinee on the final day.

Directed by Kim Dyas and Veronika Wilson, it begins years after political prisoner Paulina suffered at the hands of her captor: a man whose face she never saw, but can still recall with terrifying clarity. Tonight, by chance, a stranger arrives at the secluded beach house she shares with her husband Gerardo, a human rights lawyer. A stranger Paulina is convinced was her tormentor and must now be held to account…

The production of Shakespeare in Love is adapted for the stage by Lee Hall based on the screenplay by Marc Norman & Tom Stoppard. It runs from 12-16 November with performances at 7.45pm and a matinee on 16 November.

Directed by Jodi Rilot & Barney Hart Dyke, this stage adaptation reimagines Shakespeare’s creative process – and explores his inspiration – as he writes the greatest love story of all time, Romeo & Juliet…

Promising young playwright Will Shakespeare is tormented by writer's block until he finds his muse in the form of passionate noblewoman, Viola De Lesseps.

With all the well-loved Shakespearean tropes - cross-dressing disguises, mistaken identities, suspicions of adultery, and sword fighting, this play-within-a-play delivers a tale of love and drama set against the backdrop of Elizabethan England.
