Gok Wan Is Coming To University of Roehampton


TV icon will talk about body, self, sexuality and identity


Popular TV presenter and personality Gok Wan will talk openly about celebrity culture and the lifestyle choices we make in our everyday lives at the University of Roehampton on 14th June.

The TV icon will be at the University as part of a one day symposium which brings together scholars from fashion, promotional culture, celebrity studies and lifestyle media. Gok began his career as a motivational presenter on television shows such as How to Look Good Naked and Gok’s Fashion Fix. Since then he has turned his hand to cooking, releasing a number of cook books and presented on popular daytime show This Morning. Currently he is the presenter of Say Yes to The Dress, while still regularly making appearances on national television.

Founder Scholar of the British Psychoanalytic Council Dr Theodora Thomadaki will host the event, bringing her expertise in reality television, lifestyle media, post-feminism and psychoanalytic theory to the day’s proceedings.

Supported by the Centre for Research in Film and Audio-Visual Cultures, and in association with the Fashion, Costume and Visual Cultures Network, the symposium will combine keynote papers and panels discussing current views on makeover narratives, fashion, celebrity, aging, camp and queer cultures, online and everyday lifestyle practices. Concluding, how popular media and processes of cultural engagement enable audiences to reflect on the body, self, sexuality and identity.

Tickets for the Gok Wan talk (click to purchase tickets) , which will run from 4.30-6pm, can be purchased for £15. Tickets for the full day symposium (click to purchase tickets), which will run from 9am-6pm, will cost £49.95 or £35 for students.
