Low Traffic Neighbourhood Trial To Start In Dover House Road Estate

Residents concerned that despite the aim to reduce traffic it will create access issues

Residents in the Dover House Road Estate have been sharing concerns about a proposal for a Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) due to start on 31 August under a six month trial.

Many locals have complained that they live in the affected area and have not received any notification, some feel that it will make life impossible for deliveries as lorries and vans will have to turn around at points in the area and that it splits the estate in two as it introduces no through access on Dover House Road at the junction with Parkstead Road except for buses and cycles.

One disgruntled resident commented: "I am not happy, I have been living here for 40 years and now our council has proposed this… And looking at the map there is no way to get back into my road."

A spokesperson for Wandsworth Council told this website. "We sent out around 9,000 letters to businesses and residents across a wide area around Dover House Road. We’ve had a lot of requests over the years to do something to reduce the amount of traffic in this area. The Low Traffic Neighbourhood aims to achieve this but we would stress this is a trial scheme and will be monitoring it through site visits, surveys and feedback. We would ask residents and businesses to share their views at www.wandsworth.gov.uk/consultations"

The letter, sent by the Council informs residents: "The proposed measures are in response to Government guidance and Transport for London’s call for Local Authorities to make temporary and immediate measures to reallocate road space to people walking and cycling, both to encourage active travel and to enable social distancing. The Council has secured funding from the London Streetspace Plan (LSP) to deliver Low Traffic Neighbourhoods across the borough via an Experimental Traffic Order (ETO).

"LTNs are designed to make streets more attractive for pedestrians and cyclists as well as reduce cut-through traffic on residential roads."

Whilst the intentions may be good, many residents have commented on the forum that the practice will in fact not reduce the traffic but simply redirect traffic down other roads, with one member posting it will have the: "rat runners all squeezing down Parkstead, Pleasance and Hawksbury will be very unpleasant for residents there."

The trials are due to commence on 24th August 2020 and feedback can be submitted from that date via the following consultation page: www.wandsworth.gov.uk/consultations.
