Creative Writing Sessions Being Held for Gifted Children

Surrey Explorers is part of a charity helping those with high learning potential

Sessions are aimed at the gifted and talented

July 21, 2023

A workshop is being held in Putney by the Surrey Explorers, the local branch of Potential Plus UK, the charity for gifted children. Many thanks.

On Tuesday 25 July, Millie Graham and Paul Norris from 11am to 3am will be hoping to inspire young writers to improve their use of language and to think creatively. Whether your child is a confident writer or one who struggles to get their ideas down on the page, the sessions aim to provide structures to work by. With close analysis of some of the great writers, followed by fun exercises, and by sharing opinions, the intention is to boost oral and written skills of expression.

Schedule for the day:

11.00 - 12.45: SOUNDSCAPES AND RHYTHM: Exploring and performing poetry. From the basics of iambic pentameter to the wonderful creative freedom of slam poetry, Millie Graham will look at how sentences combine sounds to create particular effects using the devices of rhythm, rhyme, inflection and enunciation.

12.45 Lunch break

13.15 - 15.00: STORYTELLING: Paul Norris will show what works well in prose writing, and what to avoid, poring over some examples from different genres, useful techniques, and how turn your cardboard characters into properly rounded flesh and blood

The workshop is open to all 8 - 13-year-olds who are well-motivated and up for a challenge.

It is being held at the Putney Methodist Church, 1 Gwendolen Avenue, (SW15 6SN) to book your place click here.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.

We've always done that and won't be changing, in fact we'd like to do more.

However, the readership that these stories generates is often below that needed to cover the cost of producing them. Our financial resources are limited and the local media environment is intensely competitive so there is a constraint on what we can do.

We are therefore asking our readers to consider offering financial support to these efforts. Any money given will help support community and public interest news and the expansion of our coverage in this area.

If neither of these amounts is suitable for you then contact info@neighbournet.com and we can set up an alternative. All payments are made through a secure web site.

One-off donations are also appreciated. Choose The Amount You Wish To Contribute.

If you do support us in this way we'd be interested to hear what kind of articles you would like to see more of on the site – send your suggestions to the editor.

For businesses we offer the chance to be a corporate sponsor of community content on the site.
