And The Winners Are Blooming Marvelous

The Putney Society judges challenged by the high standards

The two winners

Congratulations to all 27 Putney residents that entered the garden competition – we were really impressed with the range and quality of entries from large formal gardens to guerrilla gardening around a street tree.

We were looking for a good use of space, environmentally friendly designs, including pollinator-friendly planting, gardens that had more than one season and gardens that had ways of accommodating parking while maintaining significant planting.

Runners up combines parking and pollinating planting

Prizewinners included a formal garden with clever sequential planting, a window box vibrant with toning colours and many different plants, a really colourful use of a small front garden over several seasons and another which managed to combine parking and echiums.

First prize winners:
• Mr & Mrs T Maroulakis, Dryburgh Road
• Marilyn Robinson Waller, Glendarvon Street

Runners-up:
• Liz Bridge, Fawe Park Road
• Sam Dattar, Norroy Road (nominated by Victoria Diamond and John Farrer)

Special mention – the guerrilla garden under the cherry tree in Merivale Road.

We hope that more Putney residents will be encouraged to plant up their front gardens – not only for the good of the environment but to improve the experience of walking around our streets.

Runner up for containers offers nature a wide variety of plants

Many thanks to our judges, Clare Savage, Fiona Crumley and Sandi Bloomfield who bravely endured a very rainy day but still managed to enthuse about all the entries.

The prizes will be presented at the Putney Society meeting on Monday 24 June, when Lucy Hart, the Head Gardener at Fulham Palace will be talking about the history and restoration of the palace gardens.
