New Orchard on Putney Lower Common Officially Unveiled
The trees form part of Queen Elizabeth II's Green Canopy

A ceremony was held earlier this month to officially launch a new orchard on Putney Lower Common.
On Sunday 5 March, those who contributed to the project gathered with Commons staff and Conservators to mark the unveiling of the new plaque which celebrates the orchard and explains its background.
Twelve new fruit trees of different varieties have been planted as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy, a tree planting campaign launched as part of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, and will serve as a lasting tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The orchard will be added to the Queens Green Canopy digital map.
The idea to take part in the tree planting initiative was suggested by members of the local community and visitors and neighbours of the Common contributed to a fundraising effort, including residents of the Henry Chester building and congregation members from the Parish of Putney.
Three cherry trees, three pear trees and six apple treesform the orchard and the trees have been carefully chosen so that they establish and then thrive in the soil conditions.

When in blossom the orchard will bring colour in spring and autumn alongside food and habitat for wildlife.
The Commons Conservators hope that, once the trees have established and yielding a good crop of fruit, they can partner with another local charity that can make use of the fruit that the orchard will provide.
