Residents on Howard Lane in West Putney are continuing their determined resistance to a proposal to increase the height of a building despite Wandsworth Council planners recommending it for approval.

Councillors are set to review the application at a meeting on Wednesday 23 March and will receive a report suggesting that any potential damage to the Conservation Area from the addition of a fourth floor with high level terraces to Elystan Court is outweighed by other public benefits.

The planners contend that these include a disabled parking space and an electric charging point for a car in the private carpark as well as the extra four dwellings that will be created. More than seventy objections have been submitted and those opposed are urging people to continue to submit their comments before the meeting takes place.

Objections are being made on the grounds that the public benefits are not significant enough to outweigh the harms to the West Putney Conservation Area, the loss of amenity to local residents and the suburban context of the proposal which is in an area predominantly made up of houses. It is argued that the extra floor would be more suitable for an urban context.

Opponents say they plan to instruct a QC from Kings Chambers to assess whether a judicial review could be sought if the application is approved. It would be done on the grounds that planning officers have either disregarded certain polices adopted by the Council or not given enough weight to them.
