Marks & Spencer is set to reopen its long-vacant Putney High Street store next Wednesday (25 February), ending more than seven years of uncertainty over the future of one of the area’s most prominent retail sites.
Although the company has not issued an official announcement, a sign displayed in the window confirms the reopening date, following earlier indications from local business group Positively Putney that the launch was imminent.
The Foodhall relaunch marks the return of M&S to the site it occupied for more than 90 years before closing in 2018. The empty building was seen by many as indicative of the High Street’s decline, with boarded-up windows greeting those passing through central Putney each day.
Recent weeks have seen a surge of activity inside the store, with contractors working late into the evening to prepare the site.
The Putney relaunch forms part of a major £90 million investment by Marks & Spencer to expand and modernise its London estate. The retailer is opening six new Foodhalls across the capital — including in Clapham, Covent Garden, Fulham Broadway, New Malden and Leytonstone — while refurbishing a further eleven stores.
The company has been reshaping its high-street presence nationwide, shifting towards larger, modernised Foodhalls and consolidating older sites.
The return of M&S is expected to provide a significant boost to the High Street, bringing increased footfall and potentially encouraging further investment from other retailers.
The store at 59 Putney High Street first opened in 1927 and traded for 91 years before its closure. Its reopening next week will be welcomed by many residents who have long called for the site to be revived.
