Putney Leisure Centre is set to benefit from a wave of investment as Wandsworth Council and Places Leisure launch a £24 million programme to modernise eight leisure and sports facilities across the borough. The new contract, which began on the first day of this month following a competitive tender process, marks a renewed 10-year partnership with operator Places Leisure and aims to improve access, sustainability, and community wellbeing.
Among the first improvements is a new Soft Play area at Putney Leisure Centre, designed for children under five. Scheduled to open in November, the space will feature sensory stations and imaginative play corners tailored to early years development. The facility will be free to Access for All members, supporting the council’s Year of Play initiative and its goal to make Wandsworth a leading borough for child-friendly spaces.
Councillor Paul White, Cabinet Member for Environment, said the Soft Play area responds directly to local demand, “As a listening council, we know that residents want more accessible play opportunities in Putney, so I’m delighted to be prioritising this upgrade.”
Putney Leisure Centre is also earmarked for a £4.5 million retrofit funded by the Public Sector Decarbonisation Fund. The works are expected to reduce energy use by up to 92%, making the centre one of the borough’s most sustainable public buildings.
The wider investment programme includes a £350,000 refurbishment of the Fitness Suite at Latchmere Leisure Centre and the rollout of a new Active Communities initiative to engage residents who are currently inactive. Places Leisure will also continue to support Access for All, which offers eligible residents up to 100% discounts on gym and swim services.
Belinda Steward, Managing Director of Places Leisure, said, “Putney Leisure Centre and others across the borough are pillars of the community. This investment will ensure they remain inclusive, modern spaces that bring people together and support healthier lives.”
Residents will be invited to help shape future improvements through feedback opportunities, with the council emphasising its commitment to transparency and community engagement.
