Putney Primary Pupils Petition For Food Waste Bins

Year 5 at Hotham Primary School want the introduction of food waste bins to homes

Year 5 at Hotham Primary School in Putney, have been learning all about food sustainability in their REAL project 'Food Future: what's our recipe?'

As their project comes to an end, the pupils wanted to to leave a legacy and make a change. 'We are passionate about finding ways for everyday people to be more sustainable, particularly when it comes to food.' This has resulted in them creating a petition asking Wandsworth Council to introduce food waste bins to homes in Wandsworth.

Their petition states: 'With over 75% of London boroughs already having separate bins for food waste, we believe it is an outrage that we do not.'

After in depth research, the pupils in Year 5 have found that the positives of separating your food waste are overwhelming and extremely beneficial to the environment.

They state that not only will it prevent food from going to landfills, it could also be a valuable source for bio-fuel. Their research has shown them that every year in London one person produces 2 grizzly bears worth of waste!

The petition continues: 'This issue is particularly important as homes are the biggest contributor to food waste in the UK! This has been debated many times and is at a crucial breaking point. We need to act fast for the sake of Wandsworth and future generations!'

The ePetition runs from 10/07/2019 to 10/10/2019 - to add your signature click here.
