Putney Society Describe High Street Funding As Disappointing

Says area short changed compared to other boroughs

The Putney Society have given a lukewarm reaction to the announcement of extra funding for Putney High Street.

This December Wandsworth Council was told that its bid to the Future High Streets fund had been successful and the borough had been given just over £1 million specifically for Putney High Street.

The Society has pointed out in its latest bulletin to members that the council had originally bid for £5million and the amount awarded was the lowest amount given to any borough. 15 high streets in London have been provided with £255 million of funding.

The bid submission involved improving the junction of Putney Bridge, Lower Richmond Road and Putney High Street to facilitate better conditions for pedestrians.

The plans also included improved access to Waterman’s Green as well as some alterations to the library to provide shared work spaces, a meeting room and a café.

There was also a proposal to improve the public realm outside the library in Disraeli Road.

£1,058,706 from the Future High Streets Fund Competition will be used to supplement existing projects already taking place in the centre of Putney.

The Society says, “We await an announcement from Wandsworth as to which of these schemes will be given the green light, given the much restricted budget.”

Wandsworth Council has already embarked on a scheme to improve Putney High Street. Improvements have already been carried out in the town centre including the uplighting of St Mary’s Church and the illumination of Putney Bridge.
