There was a good show of visitors on a hot day for the SW15 Hedgehog Afternoon on Saturday 23 July.

The fun free event provided the opportunity to participate in hedgehog related games and activities, family crafts, Spiny Norman and a hedgehog information stall.

It took place at the Rangers' Compound next to Oasis School on Lower Richmond Road.

There was a raffle with the first prize being a hedgehog house made by the ‘fabulous’ chaps at Roehampton Men's Sheds. It is already in its new garden where there are frequent hedgehog visitors.

The organisers thanked the hard-working team of SW15 Hedgehog volunteers and the Commons Rangers Bill Rowlands and Peter Halden for use of their compound once again and for helping out on the day. Jackie from the group said, “Bill and Peter are always so helpful to us and are very committed to helping hedgehogs.”

She added a call to put out water for hedgehogs saying “Hedgehogs may have to travel long, dangerous distances involving roads and possible predators to find fresh water. If you put out water in quiet areas of gardens/communal areas, these risks can be reduced. Placing stones in a shallow dish with some stones left protruding above the water surface allows insects to sit and drink, stones also help to slow evaporation. A fresh bowl of water on the ground attracts wildlife day and night even during winter when hedgehogs may temporarily rouse from hibernation and will wake feeling very thirsty. “

The group is also asking for people to get in touch if they would like to know more about its upcoming hedgehog night-time spotlight surveys which are part of its ongoing research into local hedgehog populations and how they use the land. You can contact them on saveourhedgehogs@gmail.com.
