Green ‘Battle of the Bike’ Tour

MEP candidates cycle around Putney and Wandsworth to meet voters

This Saturday (19 May) Green MEP candidates, Scott Ainslie and Shahrar Ali, joined Wandsworth Greens on a bike tour of the borough. The six mile carbon-free bike tour around Wandsworth included the Putney lead Green Party candidate Di McCann.

“This was a fantastic day speaking with the people of Wandsworth,” said Scott Ainslie. “I love the diversity of London and Tooting market is an excellent reflection of this. We need to secure the rights of our EU citizens and fight hard to mitigate climate breakdown. That’s why Greens in Europe are so important.”

Shahrar Ali was accompanied by his two young children in a bike trailer. He said, “The lack of proper cycle ways in places was challenging and grid locked cars made navigating Wandsworth streets with the kids difficult in places. While parliamentary business is preoccupied with Brexit, real politics takes place on the streets and in our schools. Schoolchildren are putting our politicians to shame by striking for action on the climate emergency.”

The bike tour was led by Green cycling champion, Ann Pasola: “It was great to show our candidates the diverse range of Wandsworth and our excellent green spaces. A lot more work is needed across the borough to get people out of cars by creating safer streets for cycling, walking, scooting and without pollution. Without proper dedicated cycle ways this is not going to happen. I would like to invite Wandsworth’s councillors on a bike tour to highlight the work that is needed.”

The UK’s 2019 European Parliament election will be held on Thursday 23 May 2019 with the results expected Sunday 26 May.
