Putney MP Visits St. Mary's for Cycle to School Week

Children at St Mary’s Church of England Primary School were joined this week by a special guest.
Putney MP Fleur Anderson turned up to take part in a Bikeability session in the playground. The visit was timed for Cycle to School Week which has seen more children use their bikes to travel to classes across Putney.
The session with Year 6 pupils is supported by Wandsworth Council and aims to provide training for children to encourage them to cycle more.
Bike safety expert Richard Huie also offered information on all the support the council is providing to help families cycle safely across the borough, including free courses and Dr Bike sessions.
Ms Anderson said, “I was delighted to cycle down today to join St Mary’s pupils for a Bikeability session. I am really passionate about seeing more cyclists on our roads, and confidence in cycling safely is absolutely crucial. These 10 and 11 year olds are learning life-long road safety skills – and more cycling is fantastic for our environment, public health, traffic, air quality.
“These sessions, run by Bikeability and Wandsworth Council, are invaluable. As a mother of four, I have supported all of my children in becoming confident cyclists. I meet lots of people who love cycling but want our roads to be made more cycle-friendly, which is something I am working on alongside promoting local cycling. Last year, I wrote an active travel report and I’m delighted that the Council is consulting residents on local transport.”
Chief Executive of The Bikeability Trust, Emily Cherry added, “It's fantastic to see Putney taking part in Cycle to School Week and we’re so proud of everyone pledging to pedal. Choosing an active form of transport rather than a car is the clean, green and healthy choice. By encouraging more children to cycle we can help transform our communities to be happier and healthier.
