Fleur Anderson MP has called for MPs to return to Parliament immediately to deal with the growing cost of living crisis.

She made the demand this Friday following the announcement that the energy bill price cap will rise by 80%.

The price cap rise means the typical household energy bill could hit £3,549 a year from 1 October, with a further price cap rise expected later that month.

The cost-of-living crisis is set to intensify as autumn approaches. This could mean that families pay more than 200% more on last year’s bill. It has been suggested that libraries and museums may be used as warm spaces for those unable to heat their homes.

Ms Anderson said, “This crisis needs an urgent response from our government. I am genuinely afraid of the impact that this price cap rise is going to have on the residents I represent in Putney, Southfields and Roehampton. Where is the leadership on this issue from our Prime Minister?

“My team and I work incredibly hard to support those in my constituency who need help – but we are not able to solve a cost of living crisis that’s coming at residents from every angle.

“I’ve put together an online directory on my website where residents can find agencies that can support them. I would also recommend looking at Money Saving Expert’s Cost of Living survival guide.

“But the fact that we even need to have these resources is an outrage. The Government needs to take control of this situation before hundreds of thousands of people across our country are plunged into financial ruin.”

Local institutions in Putney and Roehampton have also been taking measures to address the crisis.

Wandsworth Council has announced a raft of measures to help families cope, including offering to support families with the cost of buying new school uniform. Families may also be able to access Discretionary support grants offered by the Council and have been encouraged to check whether they qualify.

Wandsworth Foodbank are also encouraging monetary donations as well as needed food which can be donated to collection points across the Wandsworth Borough, as the number of people using the foodbank has begun to soar.
