Some Polling Suggests Tories Pulling Ahead in Wandsworth

Borough still likely to be one of London's most highly contested votes

The election is being held on Thursday 7 May

May 1, 2026

With polls having predicted a close contest in Wandsworth from the start, over the last week there has been some indication of a strengthening of support for the Conservatives.

PollCheck now estimates that there is a 95% chance of a change of control with a Conservative minority now seen as the most likely outcome with Labour shown as winning 23 seats and the Tories projected to get 29, just one short of what they would need for control.

More recent polling has suggested that West Putney might not be as close a contest as originally expected with some voters expected to switch from Labour to the Greens and Lib Dems delivering a larger Conservative majority. Elsewhere in the SW15 area, East Putney, Thamesfield and Southfields are projected to be comfortable wins for the Conservatives with Labour holding on in Roehampton.

PollCheck uses results from third party polling organisations, recent voting history and demographic data to publish ward level projections, the only organisation doing so during this election. Predictions where there is such a small electorate are difficult to make and should be regarded as speculative. However, we are confident that they are objective.

One caveat is that the analysis might not be effective when there are special circumstances in individual wards. Currently PollCheck is projecting a clean sweep for Reform in West Hill, with by far the biggest vote share for that party in the borough, and only a single digit share for the Conservatives and Labour. It seems likely that the system is struggling to cope with the historic performance of independent candidate Malcolm Grimston in that ward, so these particular projections should be treated with caution.

West Hill could play a key part in the overall results with both Labour and the Conservatives looking to take seats there. It is likely to form a quite limited group of wards in which the two leading parties are going head-to-head with the margin of victory predicted to be in single digits. It is these seats that are most likely to determine who ends up controlling the council – they are Trinity, Wandle, St. Mary’s, Wandsworth Town and Balham. Labour also faces a challenge from the Greens in Battersea Park according to this analysis.

Despite being predicted to win the overwhelming majority of seats this is happening at a time when both of the larger parties are projected to see a double digit fall in their vote share with Labour down by 19.3 percentage points (pp) and the Conservatives dropping by 10.1 pp leaving them both with around 27% overall share. The Greens, who are shown as winning about a fifth of the vote, are not likely to win many seats if these projections are accurate.

A different outcome is predicted by YouGov’s London council election MRP which was taken on 22 April which has Labour with a clear lead with 31% of the vote with the Greens in second place on 23% with the Tories in third on 20%. However, this survey does not give any ward level information and is not projecting how many seats the Greens might win.
