Hover Board and Cargo Bike Riders Targets in Police Crackdown

Acting on concerns about dangerous driving and anti-social riding

Patrols are being conducted on marked police bikes

Police officers in Putney have stepped up efforts to tackle dangerous driving and anti-social riding following concerns raised by residents in a recent community survey. Officers in Thamesfield ward, which covers the town centre, say they are focusing on both motor vehicles and two-wheeled transport, including e-scooters and hoverboards, as part of a wider push to improve safety across the area.

PC Catherall recently issued a traffic ticket to a man riding a one-wheeled hoverboard on Lacy Road. Shortly afterwards, he stopped a 12-year-old boy who was riding a private e-scooter illegally on the pavement. The boy’s mother was called to collect both her son and the scooter. Police say they are continuing to monitor the area for similar offences and are particularly concerned about the use of e-scooters, which remain illegal on public roads and pavements unless part of an approved rental scheme.

Officers are also investigating reports of a man riding a cargo bike at speed along the towpath between the Wetlands area near Putney Common and Putney Bridge. Witnesses say the rider has been behaving aggressively and swearing at passers-by while carrying a child in the bike. Police are actively looking out for the individual and have urged residents to report any sightings.

PC Catherall has resumed cycle patrols and may be seen across Thames Field Ward on his marked police bicycle, wearing a high-visibility yellow jacket. He continues to walk the beat as well, maintaining a visible presence in the community.

Police have reminded residents that anyone operating a motor vehicle should do so in a safe and considerate manner. Activities such as street racing, cruising or performing tricks are considered anti-social behaviour and can be reported through the Met Police website.
