There is a wide choice in Putney and the quality of primary education is undoubtedly high. Our Lady of the Victories has an unblemished record in terms of exam marks over the last four years but most of the others are mainly well ahead of the borough and national averages for Key Stage 2. Local State Secondaries

There is very little choice for state secondary schools in the SW15 area, and even travelling a little further does not improve the options. However most of the state schools in the area have a good reputation and are achieving consistently good results. There are four types of state school in the area:

1. Academy Schools - Academies are publicly funded schools which operate outside of local authority control. The government describes them as independent state-funded schools. Essentially, academies have more freedom than other state schools over their finances, the curriculum, and teachers' pay and conditions.

A key difference is that they are funded directly by central government, instead of receiving their funds via a local authority. In addition, they receive money which would previously have been held back by the local authority to provide extra services across all schools, such as help for children with special educational needs. This is estimated to range from 4 to 10% of the funds allocated to the school.

Academies do not have to follow the national curriculum. They can choose their own curriculum, as long as it is "broad and balanced".

2. Foundation Schools - Schools or colleges where the governors are responsible for the admissions policy.

3. Voluntary Aided Schools - Denominational schools or colleges where the governors are responsible for the admissions policy. We have included some schools in this category from outside the area because we know they are popular here.

4. City Technology College - ADT a state funded independent college, specialising in technology.
