Sue, I am really shocked and saddened by this. I thought she was absolutely wonderful, her voice, her beauty, her brains. A feminist icon! Singer, songwriter, businesswoman. What a loss!

I agree Martine, her talent was exceptional and she is irreplaceable. LBC has just read a lovely tribute from President Trump and he has said that every US flag will be flown at half-mast for 1 week commencing at 6pm, 11pm our time. Her funeral will be a massive event.

What a woman and what an achievement of a life from her book charity for children, to her music and a mentor to younger singers.7 decades in the music business a huge legacy in her song writing and performing.

Country music was never my thing but Dolly Parton always fascinated me. Her image - the huge blonde wigs, the flawless makeup and her beautiful outfits covered in rhinestones was very special and when J got the opportunity to see her at the Hammersmith Odeon in the late 70’s, I jumped at it. Well she was incredible and I have been a fan ever since.
Very sad news. Country music isn't my favourite genre but she came across as a great performer and wrote some great songs. She was also a great philanthropist and promoter of healthcare, education, etc and had great compassion for the underprivileged and those that did conform with mainstream society.

Ms Hammond Dolly Parton was the musical voice of and for the true working class, and herself always part of it however much money she rightly made. And a great example of what an individual can achieve from a lowly start in 'the land of the free'.She also wrote the best (only ?) anthem for feminism "9 to 5" and never blamed 'the patriarchy'.Eat your heart out Zoe Williams and other Guardian columnists and readers.I hope every UK school child who received a book funded by her is told to bring it in and read on the first day of next term.BTW my favourite track on the CD I have of her greatest hits is "Islands in the Stream", a duet with Kenny Rogers.Gorgeous schmaltz !
