New Gambling Venue

The decision to licence a new gambling venue on Putney High Street is another example of the views of residents not being listened to. In spite of a plethora of objections including from our MP and ex prison chaplain Elizabeth Bridge who pointed out that vulnerable people could be affected by this venue operating. It is also out of keeping with Putney High Street - residents want useful and appropriate venues in which to do their shopping - this is neither.

Ealing Council refused to licence a similar venue. The operator appealed the decision but the refusal was upheld this week. The two cases may not be exactly the same but I wonder if Wandsworth could have delayed its decision until the Ealing case had been decided.

This post broadens the narrative to a reoccurring theme: At the risk of boring everyone and warming to my theme what about the perennially filthy pavements and the neglected metal planters near to what appears to be the now defunct Oxogen Tree. (Residents may remember when this was the new wonder of Putney High Street.) What is going on with the planters and the working to non working status of the Oxygen Tree are issues that Councillor Brooks continues to fail to clarify how ever many times I write to him...

PHS is becoming an absolute hovel, and Wandsworth Council seems content to let it happen. While other local hubs, such as Old York Road, are benefiting from significant investment and thriving, PHS is being left to decline.The other day, a drunk man stumbled out of Ladbrokes and verbally abused anyone who crossed his path. It's unacceptable, and residents deserve far better. Shameful.

Actually, it's even worse than you've said, Miles: sadly, The Source, the plastic-free and zero waste bulk food shop at 135 PHS, is closing down because, Thibaud says, of the challenging climate in the High Street. So we get that blasted gambling emporium abd lose one of the best shops in the street. What a shame!

I suppose that money laundering facilities will be of use to some. Council only cares about the business rates, not morality

Yes indeed what anomalies. Where as we could actually do with useful shops and clean pavements rather than disgraceful filthy paving, a selection of coffee shops, over priced charity shops, a twenty four hour gym and now a twenty four hour gambling facility - unsettling features of post modern urban life...

Exactly - additionally we don’t need a 24 hr gym either as shown on the front page.  What is the matter with our Council that it can’t stand up to professional licensing and planning lawyers?

I find it very odd that a gambling 'shop' needs to be open 24/7. Will they provide bed & breakfast, endless coffee and perhaps even loan facilities?Gambling is an addiction that erodes quality of life and sometimes destroys lives, why is society enabling the addicts?

Would it be wrong to assume that high vacancy rates on the High Street led the council to adopt a lax local plan for the area?

More dumbing down of our High Street.  Do you know the reason(s) given to grant this licence?  I assume it listed the benefits because I can’t think of any?
