Hungary Elections

Polling stations will have just closed in Hungary, unfortunately, there are no exit polls.Apparently, there's been a record turnout with long queues at the polling stations, which could be a positive sign that Hungary might be about to dump Viktor Orbán, much to the irritation of Trump and Putin.There will be celebrations in Europe, Ukraine and West Putney, of course, if Péter Magyar wins. Nail-biting stuff!!

Perhaps the most satisfying aspect of Orban's defeat is that it gives a huge boost to the EU's ability to provide support for the Ukrainians in their fight against Putin's vicious aggression. I can't imagine anyone here would disagree with that!

Interesting commentary emerging that this is a defeat brought about by Orban cosying up too much to Trump. Actually seems to be more his cosying up to Putin that swung it. The polls suggest most Hungarians are pro-European so it was a positive vote for Magyar and his pro-EU stance that swept Orban away.

Good news indeed. I was half expecting a Trump-type denial that he’d lost, followed by a Jan 6th-type attempted coup, as was also tried by Bolsonaro in Brazil. I hope the new guy doesn’t disappoint.

Dignified in defeat indeed.  I wonder if Starmer will be equally dignified when he loses the next GE?

I'm impressed that Viktor Orbán has conceded defeat in the elections in such a dignified manner:"The election results, though not yet final, are clear and understandable; for us, they are painful but unambiguous, we have not been entrusted with the responsibility and opportunity to govern. I congratulated the winning party," he said."I can think of some others who could learn a lot from him.

Wow. At lest Orban seems to have gone gracefully! Looks like if you want to win an election, ask Trump not to support you and meddle in elections in Europe :-)
