Changes to recycling

Very interesting - and very confusing. 1. What CAN you put in a bin? The list of things you can't seems extremely long. 2. These rules were supposed to come in at the end of March but the binmen in my area have been applying them for the last three weeks. Why? It strikes me that these new rules are intended to benefit the council and profit-making commercial refuse establishments rather than council tax payers. Worth keeping in mind when local elections are held.

DON'T PANIC!  "Simpler Recycling" IS coming where the same things will be collected kerbside.  There is new Govt legislation already in place and Councils are now having to put this into practice.  Remember we are just doing an initial separation ready for the further sorting that needs to take place by machine and hand to improve the quality of feedstock for reuse and there are some problematical things to avoid putting in.  This poster seems to just be a warning showing what NOT to put in the Council KERBSIDE Recycling - much of which is logical and we already know.For instance different types of glass melt at different temperatures:  So avoid putting any Pyrex (heat resistant) glass in and any window glass etc with the mostly jam jar and bottle glass as well as leaving the candles out of that collection!

I agree Jonathan.  The photo that I posted was of a leaflet delivered to a friend who lives in Worcester Park which isn’t that far away and presumably uses the same recycling centre as our borough?

One of the big problems in London, never mind the rest of the country, is that every council has different rules and processes.The changes just announced apply only in Wandsworth, as far as I know.  One day we may see standardised rules across London - after all a lot of what is collected ends up in the same recycling centres.

Recycling is obviously a very good thing to do but the rules are now getting ridiculous in my opinion.  The notice below was on FB:

I may have missed a point somewhere along the way, but has the Council banned the use of standard rubbish bins? Two weeks in a row my black bin with paper rubbish inside has been ignored. Black plastic bags and see-throughs are taken away.
