I appreciate, Jonathan, your attempt to answer the question, which is more than anyone else on this thread has done. But I am not convinced that the previous policy of negotiation and containment achieved even limited success. Iran armed Hamas and Hezbollah in pursuit of its avowed policy of wiping Israel off the map and has enriched over 200 kilos of uranium to 60%. In my opinion regime change is the only solution, which would be welcomed by the overwhelming majority of the population, though I admit that I don’t know how this can be achieved.

Let me attempt an answer. The previous policy of the west, negotiation and containment, achieved some limited success, but was undermined when Trump pulled out in his first term. The rationale for that never made sense to me but he seems to have been motivated by a desire to reverse every Obama achievement. Had it continued then we would certainly have avoided the current disaster, a disaster which is affecting nearly every country in the world, not just the western countries so hated by the Iranian regime. The sooner we can return to that the better, but it requires a degree of resolve and unanimity sorely missing in the west and a degree of willingness to comply sorely lacking in Iran. Frankly, I do not however see a viable alternative. Regime change, which we would (nearly) all welcome, is nowhere in sight and will not come from the current bombing campaign. In fact, even if we end up with US boots on the ground, I don’t see it coming.

It is obvious that regime change has not yet occurred in Teheran, while the Iranians continue to resist even though their military capabilities have been severely damaged. But this does not mean that the mission is doomed to fail. It remains to be seen what concessions the regime is prepared to make in order to  end the bombardment. The next few days will be crucial.But my question to all those who oppose the attack on Iran is the same as before: how do you propose ensuring that Iran stops sponsoring terrorism in the Middle East and elsewhere, gives up trying to develop a nuclear bomb and ceases to murder thousands of  its own citizens?
