Albert Bridge closes to traffic as 'precaution'

Albert Bridge in west London has been closed to traffic as "a precautionary measure" following an inspection.Kensington and Chelsea Council said concerns had been raised during routine maintenance of the 150-year-old crossing, which connects Battersea to Chelsea.Engineers are analysing findings from the planned inspection, with the bridge being shut to vehicles while they "identify appropriate actions", the council said.The route remains open to pedestrians, with traffic being diverted via Chelsea Bridge and Battersea Bridge.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cgml7mzd290o

There was a time when there were philanthropists who were only too happy to create buildings and put their names on them as a part of their legacy.  They don't have to be living here, still living here, or still living.

Hello Philippa,"Who wants to pay for that?" We already do, through taxes!!! Be it income tax, congestion charge, LEZ or ULEZ, taxes on petrol, to name just a few. Are you suggesting, by any chance, that all bridges over the Thames should be closed to all vehicular traffic, including buses?

Yes they have - exactly where is this slush fund of surplus money.  David you really need to get out more, people are not spending and earning anywhere near what they thought they would.

With rising unemployment Phillipa nobody has any spare cash.  Them and they that you have quoted have left the country as we have slower growth than Greece and Albania.

But who wants to pay for that?  Who is this mysterious "them" we would all like to pay for it and how will "they" raise the money - and why?  Are there any philanthropists just like the ones we had in Victorian times.  Money in Victorian times was also raised "by public subscription" which I suppose is similar to crowd funding now.

Hello Steven,No, Alber Bridge was not intended for pedestrians only ever.The motor vehicles have been in existence for some time now - not just the last decade.  If people are responsible for its maintenance and upkeep, something went very wrong somewhere - as it did with Hammersmith Bridge.If both bridges are deemed to be obsolete now, they must be moved to other locations so they do become pedestrian only bridges and garden bridges too.New bridges must be built to replace them.  There is no question about it.

No doubt the anti-car lobby will tells us that the closure is not responsible for increased congestion on nearby bridges and in any case Albert Bridge was intended for pedestrians.

It wasn't designed for modern traffic. Looking at Wikipedia it's needed several goes at remedial over the years and is now part beam bridge in the middle section.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Bridge,_London
