Australian Researcher and 8 Lower Common

Australian Researcher and 8 Lower Common South Putney.  Hello to all members and thank you for allowing me the opportunity to post.  I stumbled upon your forum after undertaking a search for a house called Ettrick in Putney.  I happened to find Michael Whitehall's old post from 2010 and hence this follow up.  I believe the house in question (no longer in existence I gather) may be the home of one George Henry Haydon, artist, writer and one time resident of early Melbourne 1840-1845.  Haydon spent a considerable amount of time in the Western Port Bay area (close toMelbourne) and this is a topic I have written on.  I was keen to obtain a photograph of Haydon's home as the name Ettrick relates to a small cutter that used to sail in Western Port and deliver much needed supplies to Haydon when he was living briefly on the rather rugged and deserted French Island.  As the name Ettrick is an unusual one and as I know Haydon's home was in Putney (he died in 1891).  I think 8 Lower Common must be the one.  Hopefully some of the members may be able to assist.  My sincere thanks, John

Hello Martine,  That is so kind of you... yes I gather that must be Haydon's old house.  Think your tech skills are perfect!  I would be very happy to use that image in the article but will of course check with the Forum and Michael (if I can contact him) for permission.  Brilliant Martine... Good Morning, thank you Katrina, Nick and Philippa, I greatly appreciate your prompt feedback and assistance.  I probably should explain that I am writing a piece on Haydon and simply wanted to include an image of his last home if one was available.  I did not know that Ettrick was a small Scottish town so thank you for that.  Yes, the Australian Dictionary of Biography is a useful source and actually an accurate article.  Haydon died at his home, Ettrick, Putney Lower Common, on 9 November 1891.  I gather this must have been the Ettrick described by Michael Whitehall's post in 2010 and sadly now demolished.  I am assuming there would be no other house in Putney Lower Common by that name.  I'd love an image of the house if one was available.  My thanks again....I will advise the progress,...watch this space.  John

John — I looked up his entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography which has quite a lot of history although no mention of Putney. See https://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/haydon-george-henry-3735 Have you tried searching census records? Nick

I suggest you try Wandsworth council website and put historic maps into the search box. Ettrick is a small town in the borders of Scotland near Selkirk so he may have had a connection to there.
