I thought if there were no staff in attendance then tube and rail barriers had to be left open in case of emergencies. Late in the evening the barriers at East Putney are often open when there appear to be no staff present.

My experience of these bar code scanners for train tickets is that there is much more chance of them not reading your ticket that the existing tube barriers. Sometimes it is because the bar code is upside down but on other occasions it is inexplicable which is why train stations usually have staff at barriers. If TfL don't do like wise, this could end up causing more congestion at stations but I nevertheless applaud the intention.
