Pavements - URR

I think the state of some of the pavement on URR is pretty bad.  I reported one bit of pavement to the Council about 2 months ago.  I was walking along and a paving slab I stood on was loose, in fact it wasn’t stuck down at all to the ground below and rocked from side to side.  2 other paving stones next to it were sticking up out the ground. This wasn’t a residential street, it was on URR, outside a shop.  It made me wonder who was responsible for the pavement at that point, The Council, TFL or the shop owners? Also, I also tripped on a manhole cover, fell over, and face planted on the pavement a month ago on URR pavement in another location. Just wondered if I’m the only one troubled by the poor state of the pavements on URR.

It’s a very simple answer. You have a Labour council and a labour MP Fleur Anderson whom are just not working for Putney. As was shown at the recent Putney Bridge meeting they just don’t care. Fleur even tried to swerve some questions on the St George’s minor injuries unit. It’s all politics to her and she hasn’t even spoken up about the Heathrow situation which is another example that we need to get these people out of office asap.

Exactly! Trying to promote Putney High Street when it is so dirty is very difficult. Effective street cleaning is not a priority for Wandsworth  Council

Martine  Yes, URR is a red route - ie TfL.  Wandsworth Council could have come back to you to tell you this.  Chase them to find out what they have or haven't done. You could tell them in the shops what happened to you, where and why which would give them the heads up to do something about it if they are or feel responsible about their forecourt.  In my experience though you may well just get a blank look - even though when I was in the same position the street vendor nearby commented that I was the third person so far that day to trip on that particular paving stone right outside their shop!  (not London)You could get in touch with and ask your local Councillors for help if you aren't sure whose land the paving is on.If you use the website www.fixmystreet.com they will send the notification of a problem to the correct Council or Highways Authority wherever you are in the country - which is brilliant - as we don't stay in the place we live or work in all of the time.  It makes a situation much clearer for whoever you are contacting and reporting to if you can upload a photo of the problem and send it to them as well as describing it.  It is useful to use something like a coin to demonstrate the scale of difference in paving stone heights. You have to remember that you may not be lucky enough next time to just get up and limp way.Bon courage!

I completely agree about the disgusting state of Putney High Street; it's filthy, stinking and an utter disgrace that the Council do nothing about cleaning it on a regular basis. By cleaning, I mean washing and disinfecting it like so many of our European neighbours do - on a daily basis. Why do we have to put up with his crap?

When I looked online about this, I think it is TFL that are responsible for pavements on the red routes.  However my guess is that the loose paving slab that rocked  is the responsibility of the shop owner, as I think they have rights over the pavement?  The loose paving slabs are of a different design to the main pavement.  Just wondered if anyone knows? Judy, I think you totally understand.   I am trying to rebuild my confidence.

You are very right to report pavement (aka footway) problems and falls can be life changing for you and your family - if not worse.  The hospitals and ambulance services could also do with fewer casualties to deal with and the disruption to you and your family life can be huge as well as confidence crushing.  Something people often don't think about until it happens to them.  Please do follow up your report/s for all pavement users' sakes.  I used the magnifer icon search facility on the Wandsworth website to get to this page.  It wasn't very obvious otherwise - something you might like to take further.https://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/roadworks/red-routes/

Totally agree about dodgy paving slabs.  I and many friends and neighbours find we have to walk along looking down to spot trip hazards.  Not great for confidence or posture...

The pavements, particularly the High Street in Putney are dirty and refuse ridden - a sad comment on Wandsworth Council's public services.

Thanks Richard.  It has really dented my confidence and I hate having to slow down and look at the pavement all the time. If I want to report trip hazard paving on the URR pavement, who is responsible WBC or TFL?   Or is it the shop owners, as they have some rights too regarding pavements?

You're certainly not  alone, Martine! The pavements in residential streets are just as bad, with slabs not aligning everywhere and so many potential trip hazards you have constantly to be on the lookout.
