Free talk at Putney Library Thursday 25th September
Illustrated talk by John Clarke on the Brookwood Necropolis Railway sponsored by the Friends of Putney Library. From 1854 to 1941 the London Necropolis Company conducted railway funerals from its private station just outside Waterloo to its vast cemetery at Brookwood near Woking in Surrey. This illustrated lecture outlines the history of this unusual railway service and shows how the Necropolis Company operated its railway funeral service in co-operation with the London & South Western and Southern Railway companies.Our speaker, John Clarke, is an acknowledged expert on Brookwood Cemetery and its railway. He has been researching, writing and lecturing on the cemetery for many years. He is also a Trustee of the Friends of West Norwood Cemetery.Refreshments from 6pm, talk begins at 6.30pm through to 7.30pm
